Background:

We are three organisations that all represent deaf families; these organisations are

  • CODA UK & Ireland: Children of Deaf Adults UK and Ireland, who support CODA’s and their families in social and advocacy spaces in UK and Ireland.

  • CODPUK: Children of Deaf Parents UK who support deaf parents and their children through social events.

  • DPUK: Deaf Parenting UK, who support deaf parents and families in advocacy space.

  • BSL Alliance: This is an independent partnership of deaf organisations, that work together to strengthen British Sign Language in UK. For this survey we are working with Early Years Action Steering Group to identify the barriers for deaf parents in getting accessibility in parenting and family space. We are leading a data collection process to build our case to the government.

How are we collecting data/information?

We will be collecting this data through a log of when incidents happen; for example, if you attend a hospital appointment during pregnancy, or with your child and no interpreter is booked for the appointment. You can then provide us with information about your experience through this log. This log will be in Google form. You can use English or BSL, and BSL responses will be translated to written English and anonymised.

What will we do with the data?

All of the data will be anonymised: we will not ask for names or personal information. Once this project is completed the videos will be destroyed. The data collected from the form will be stored in a spreadsheet, which will be kept on a private online system. The online system is owned and operated by CODA UK & Ireland and all data will be managed in line with GDPR and Data Protection laws. CODA UK & Ireland has a full data protection policy and if you want to read it, please email the organisations official data handler: matt@codaukireland.co.uk. CODA UK & Ireland is registered with the Information Commissioner Office (ICO). Access to the data will be restricted at all times to the relevant representatives from CODA UK & Ireland CIC, CODPUK, & DPUK. They have signed up to follow CODA UK & Ireland’s regulations.

Your rights:

You are not obliged to participate. You also can stop anytime in the survey. We will ask you to provide your consent at end of questions for the information to be used as described above & you can withdraw your consent at any point in the process.

Log Survey:

Please use this form to log down any situations where you cannot access a service or activity for your child's schools or activities due to the lack of a British Sign Language interpreter. This includes nurseries, preschools, childminders, babies, children, or parent activity/service providers (like playgroups, sports clubs or mothers’ groups), primary or secondary school.
