“Sights and Signs” is a collaborative project between UCL, the University of Linkoping (Sweden) and the University of Manchester. This project studies how experience of deafness and experience of spoken and/or sign language both impact on how the brain processes language, and how we process and remember what we see depending on whether it looks like language or not. For this project, we are currently looking for volunteers who are both native English speakers AND native British Sign Language signers (i.e. native bilinguals), to take part.

The study is split into two sessions, which can be done on one day or separate days. These sessions are done near Russell Square in Central London. Alternatively, a researcher can travel to meet the volunteer at a convenient venue. Participants will be asked to do behavioural tasks on a computer or with pencil and paper for both sessions. The behavioural tests involve visual-spatial, reading, memory, picture-language association and sign imitation tasks. Each session takes approximately one and a half hours. We will pay any travel expenses and £10 per hour for your time.

Your participation would be of great help to the project and to further our understanding of sign language and the brain. For further information, please do not hesitate to contact me.
